LISBON MAIN STREET E-NEWS SPECIAL EDITION Friday, June 25, 2010
“Sumer is icumin in”…Middle English for “summer has arrived.”
SUMMER HAS ARRIVED – So has the Lisbon Farmers Market! Tomatoes soon will be here. Meanwhile, there are plenty of greens to be had, and eggs. Beets are ready as well. We should see peas very soon, too. If you want to see some of the most luxuriously colored wool yarn, stop and visit with Dori Hamilton, who brings her own Lisbon-grown wool to the market each week. Dori spins and dyes her own yarn. And the natural colors are quite luscious, too. Expect to see coffee and muffins available at the market this Saturday, too. We are growing again after changing our market day from Thursday to Saturday. We hope to see you there!
FARMERS MARKET BASICS – There is no more basic business development activity than a farmers’ market. Your friends and neighbors come together in a convenient location and sell what they make or grow (or both!). If they are successful, learning from their experience at the market, they have an opportunity to grow their business. Locally – particularly the Littleton and St. Johnsbury farmers markets – have fostered the development of full-time businesses that are flourishing and providing income to sustain families. Several vendors from both those markets have evolved into wholesale suppliers to many local businesses – their products range from baked goods to fresh, locally grown produce. The Lisbon Main Street office is able to provide new vendors the guidance they need to get started. If you know someone who needs a little nudge – perhaps they make wonderful, hand-crocheted baby clothes or unique hand-thrown pots, cups or bowls, or they make cheese, or candles, herbal sachets. Maybe they grow superior tasting tomatoes or eggplant, have them give us a call at 838-2200 and we will help them get started.
UPPER VALLEY HUMANE SOCIETY – A collection for the animal shelter will take place at the Lisbon Farmers Market this Saturday. Our friend Jesse Whalen Tyler of Landaff has put out this request: UVHS is in need of blankets, towels, flat sheets, food bowls, and all sorts of office supplies. Their shelter is closed because there's been an outbreak of ringworm among the cats. That means UVHS needs to dispose of EVERYTHING. Used items are OK. Thank you! Please pass along to friends.
